Footwear modification, bunion pads and orthoses to relieve symptoms.
Key points
Evidence summary in preparation.
Lateral deviation of the hallux with medial deviation of the first metatarsal, causing a painful bunion and transfer symptoms. Footwear modification and orthoses relieve symptoms but do not correct deformity. Surgery corrects the deformity with distal or shaft osteotomies (chevron, scarf with Akin), first tarsometatarsal fusion (Lapidus) for severe or hypermobile deformity, or minimally invasive percutaneous osteotomies.
Footwear modification, bunion pads and orthoses to relieve symptoms.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Distal chevron or scarf shaft osteotomy, usually with an Akin osteotomy of the proximal phalanx.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Percutaneous distal metatarsal osteotomy (third/fourth generation, e.g. MICA) with screw fixation, plus Akin.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Fusion of the first tarsometatarsal joint for severe or hypermobile deformity.
